Syrian ambassador to Tehran said his country sought to expand relations with allies, Iran’s private sector in particular, for economic activities and reconstruction purposes.
Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud made the remarks during a meeting on Sunday with Head of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Gholam Hossein Shafei.
During the joint session, Mahmoud pointed to excellent political ties between the two countries and emphasized the need to bolster economic ties.
He said the meeting aimed to reinvigorate economic relations and form trade transaction between the two countries saying “numerous venues for cooperation exist in various fields including industry, mining, agriculture as well as joint venture.”
The Syrian envoy referred to planning and offering facilities for development of commercial turnover with Iran adding “on the basis of free trade agreement, the Syrian government imports Iranian goods without taxes or customs tariffs and looks forward to introducing traditional products like olive oil, citrus fruit and cotton to Iran.”
“Syria is presently in need of reconstructing economic infrastructures like electricity transmission lines and transportation,” highlighted Mahmoud inviting Iran’s top companies to participate in the projects.
Iran Chamber of Commerce President Gholam Hossein Shafei congratulated recent victories achieved by the Syrian government and nation stressing the need for reconstruction of the friend country.
He also called for careful planning as regards the private sector and urged exploitation of bilateral cooperation opportunities in areas like automaking, food industries as well as technical and engineering services.
Also at the meeting, Deputy Head of ICCIMA for International Affairs Mohammad Reza Karbasi said economic cooperation between the two sides required short- and long-term plans voicing readiness to form a committee for holding economic summits and specialized exhibitions in the short run in addition to introduction of reconstruction projects and investment opportunities in the long run.
Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) of Iran and announced that the country exported 105.455 million dollars of commodities to Syria in the first seven months of the current Iranian calendar year (began March 20) while the imports figure from Syria stood at 5.165 million dollars.
