Iranian private sector will have a lion's share in Iraq electricity, power generation, power network reconstruction, water and sewerage projects, says Iran Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian, according to Iran's official news agency, IRNA.

'More than 65% of energy producers in Iran are in private sector and will have a lion's share in implementation of the MoU,' said Ardakanian in a joint press conference with Iraq's Minister of Electricity Luay Al Khateeb after inking a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with his host on Thursday for joint energy cooperation.

Ardakanian said he had also discussions with Iraqi Minister of Construction and Housing Bangen Rekani for water and sewage treatment cooperation and private sector can have active presence in the field as well.

Asked about Iran's electricity export to Iraq, Al Khateeb said overall up to 4,000 megawatts per hour electricity is purchased from Tehran.

The Iraqi minister stressed the amount fluctuates in different seasons as it reaches its climax in the hot season, highlighting the promising prospect of the two countries' energy cooperation.

Inside Iraq, several public and private Iranian companies are already building power plants and supplying power to the country's national grid, according to President of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, Alireza Kolahi, who was talking to Iran Chamber of Commerce Newsroom on 17 December.
