Iran least indebted country in Middle East, Central Asia: IMF report

A recent report by the International Monetary Fund says Iran has the least amount of gross external debt among the countries located in the Middle East and Central Asia.

A recent report by the International Monetary Fund says Iran has the least amount of gross external debt among the countries located in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The IMF report investigates the ratio of the total gross external debt of the 28 countries under review from their 2022 GDP.  

Iran’s total gross external debt constitutes an only 0.5% of the country’s GDP in 2022 which is the least among the regional countries, according to the report.

The ratio of Iran's foreign debt to GDP remained flat compared to figures from the preceding year, the report said.  

It said that the average ratio of the regional countries’ foreign debt to their GDP stood at 35.8%.

The report also put Bahrain as the most indebted country in the region with its foreign debt being 207.3% of its GDP.
