A Joint Syria-Iran Economic Committee has been set up in Damascus that will pave the way for the establishment of a future joint chamber of commerce between the two countries.
Omran Shaban, a Syrian businessman, has been chosen as head the 10-member committee.
Keyvan Kashefi, head of the Joint Iran-Syria Economic Committee, and Shaban signed the agreement at the end of Iran-Syria Business Forum in Damascus on Tuesday.

Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) created the joint economic committee last year in a bid to boost trade ties between two countries’ private sectors.
“I believe the creation of this committee will take the brunt of upgrading economic ties between Iran and Syria,” said Kashefi following the signing ceremony.
“As Iran is an industrial country, this committee can be an effective step in strengthening bilateral economic ties,” Omran Shaban told Iran Chamber Newsroom.
He stressed the importance of this committee saying it can bolster economic cooperation between the two Middle Eastern countries given they are both sanctioned.
He also announced that he could visit Iran as soon as the next month.
Now that both countries have joint economic committees, they can move forward to create a joint chamber of commerce.
Kashefi had earlier told Iran Chamber Newsroom the committee would be created duirng the trip to Syria.
