Iran and Tajikistan are eager to scale up their bilateral trade exchanges as the two Farsi-speaking nations have seen ups and downs in their political and economic ties in recent years.
“There are great common cultural and historical background between Iran and Tajikistan. Iran used to offer technical-engineering services in the past and now we hope that we can expand this after the relaunch of direct flights between the two countries,” said Gholam Hossein Shafei, Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) President on Saturday.
He was meeting Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Iran Zohidi Nizomiddin Shamsiddinzoda at the ICCIMA headquarters on Saturday.
Shafei added that Tehran and the Iranian private sector are ready to implement previous agreements between the two countries.
Head of the Iranian private sector parliament mentioned that both countries should keep organising exhibitions in each nation to introduce their products.
Zohidi Nizomiddin Shamsiddinzoda noted that Iran-Tajikistan bilateral trade volume decreased from $500m to $65m last year.
However, he expressed hope that Tehran and Dushanbe can resume previously-good political and economic relations.
“We have not only been supplied by the Iranian electricity, but also can export energy as well. We have secured our food products as well,” said Zohidi during the meeting.
“We are now looking to boost our industry for which we are seeking good relations with Iran,” said the Tajik envoy to Iran.
Earlier in June, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirodjidin Mukhriddin [Aslov] said that Dushanbe is interested in getting connected to the international waters through Iran.
“A major part of Tajikistan’s transit and economic problems is because it doesn't have access to the sea that’s why we want to use the Chabahar Port to resolve these problems,” said Tajik Foreign Minister Sirodjidin Mukhriddin [Aslov] on 1 June in Tehran.
