More than 88,000 tons of seafood worth $172 million were exported from Iran during the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Oct. 22).
the figure registers a 15% and 60% rise in tonnage and value respectively compared with the similar period of last year, according to the head of Iran’s Seafood Producers and Exporters Union.
“So far this year, we have exported seafood to 57 countries,” Ali Akbar Khodaei was also quoted as saying by ILNA.
According to the official, Iran’s seafood industry has created about 260,000 direct jobs.
“About 50% of the jobs in processing firms, conserve industries, research and development departments and education centers are held by women,” he said.
He noted that Iran’s per capita seafood consumption currently stands at 10-11 kilograms per year, which is almost half the global average of 20 kg.
More than 166,000 tons of seafood worth $554 million were exported from Iran in the last Iranian year (March 2021-22), registering a 19% and 14% rise in weight and value respectively compared with the year before, according to the head of Iran Fisheries Organization.
“Around 700,000 tons of seafood were harvested from the sea during the period and more than 610,000 tons were farmed in aquaculture firms across the country,” Hossein Hosseini was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
