Iran is mulling direct gas imports from Turkmenistan and negotiations are underway between the two neighboring countries in this regard, according to Deputy Oil Minister Majid Chegeni.
Chegeni, also the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, said that Iran is currently in a gas swap deal from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan under which Iran receives 10 mcm/day of gas from Turkmenistan and pumps the same amount to Azerbaijan.
He had recently told reporters that Pakistan, Afghanistan and Oman have signaled readiness for receiving gas from Iran.
Noting that Iran is considering the requests, Chegeni said that the ground is not prepared for pumping Iran’s gas to some of these countries.
He also said that Turkey has asked for more Iranian gas supplies to the country, adding that experts from both sides are considering the extension of an existing gas contract.
