Iran is pushing for approval from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Rail Transport Council to allow its rail wagons to operate across the bloc’s extensive rail network, aiming to enhance its cargo transit capabilities.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways announced that its CEO, Jabbar-Ali Zakeri, attended the 81st meeting of the CIS Railway Transport Council held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on November 5-6. Zakeri represented Iran as an observer state and used the platform to submit Iran’s request to join the CIS railway network.
Chaired by Russia, the council meeting included railway officials from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Iran, Latvia, and Estonia.
Discussions focused on freight planning for 2024-2025 and strengthening regional cooperation in the rail transport sector.
The move underscores Iran’s strategic efforts to connect with CIS nations and leverage their rail infrastructure for improved access to key markets.
