Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, has reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to supplying electricity to Iraq, despite the United States revoking a sanctions waiver that had allowed Baghdad to import Iranian electricity.
Previously, the US had granted Iraq an exemption from its unilateral sanctions on Iran, enabling it to pay for electricity imports.
However, in a post on X on Tuesday, Araqchi criticized Washington’s decision, calling it an attempt to deprive innocent Iraqis of essential services, particularly as the country approaches the hot summer months.
“We stand with the people of Iraq and remain committed to our agreements, working to counter the United States' unlawful actions,” he stated.
The US decision comes as Iraqi officials stress that they have no viable alternative to Iranian energy imports. They warn that rising summer consumption could lead to severe electricity shortages across the country.
