Iran’s agriculture sector grows 3.2% in FY2024/25 – minister

Iran’s agriculture sector grew 3.2% in the Iranian calendar year ending March 2025, driven by a 32% rise in agricultural exports and a $3 billion improvement in the sector’s trade balance, Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri Qezeljeh said.

Iran’s agriculture sector grew 3.2% in the Iranian calendar year ending March 2025, driven by a 32% rise in agricultural exports and a $3 billion improvement in the sector’s trade balance, Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri Qezeljeh said.

Speaking at a ministry event, Nouri underscored the strategic importance of domestic food production and self-sufficiency, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions.

“The 12-day war involving Israel reminded us of the vital role food security plays during crises,” he said, adding that Iran’s ability to maintain domestic calm during the conflict highlighted the strength of its agricultural resilience.

The minister said the agriculture sector’s share in the national economy rose from 6.7% to over 7.0% last year, a 5.6% increase in relative contribution.

Nouri also addressed Iran’s worsening water shortages, calling the provision of potable water the government’s top priority. He urged state agencies across provinces to coordinate local efforts and called for reduced consumption at both institutional and individual levels.

Responding to criticism over high water usage in farming, Nouri acknowledged inefficiencies but defended the sector’s role in ensuring national food security.

“While some concerns are valid, agriculture cannot be held solely responsible for all water-related challenges,” he said, adding that steps were being taken to boost water efficiency in the sector.
