Iran chamber chief urges diplomacy to avert UN sanctions ‘snapback’

The president of Iran Chamber of Commerce has called for active diplomacy to prevent the possible reimposition of United Nations sanctions, warning that any return of restrictions would deliver a shock to the country’s fragile economy.

The president of Iran Chamber of Commerce has called for active diplomacy to prevent the possible reimposition of United Nations sanctions, warning that any return of restrictions would deliver a shock to the country’s fragile economy.

Samad Hassanzadeh said on Saturday that avoiding the snapback of UN sanctions should be at the center of national policymaking, stressing the need for “sustainable agreements” through diplomacy.

“Although the impact of triggering the snapback mechanism may be less than adversaries portray, it will still carry consequences that require vigilant attention and careful planning,” Hassanzadeh said.

He pointed to long-standing imbalances, chronic currency volatility and high structural inflation, saying that under such conditions the return of UN sanctions would act as an external shock. Hassanzadeh urged officials, businesses and media to present a realistic picture of the potential consequences, avoiding both exaggeration and downplaying of the risks.

The business leader warned that investment would be among the sectors most affected, as heightened uncertainty could deter both domestic and foreign investors, leading to lower productivity and reduced growth capacity.

“The severity of the impact largely depends on how Iran responds,” Hassanzadeh said. “Escalation will expose the economy and politics to wider pressures, while prioritizing engagement and cooperation could help manage some of the effects and reduce long-term costs.”
