First Iran-Kuwait transit shipment crosses Iraq under TIR convention

Iraq’s General Authority of Customs said on Wednesday that the first international transit shipment from Iran to Kuwait has entered Iraq under the TIR convention and is en route to Kuwait via the Safwan border crossing.

Iraq’s General Authority of Customs said on Wednesday that the first international transit shipment from Iran to Kuwait has entered Iraq under the TIR convention and is en route to Kuwait via the Safwan border crossing.

In a statement, the authority described the move as a strategic development in expanding Iraq’s transit activities, saying the activation of the route would help streamline the flow of goods, enhance customs security efficiency, and cut transportation time and costs in line with international TIR standards.

The authority added that the step would also strengthen the competitiveness of Iraq’s transit corridors.

Thamer Qasim Dawood, director general of Iraq’s customs authority, said the achievement reflected a clear reform-driven approach to customs management focused on updating procedures and adopting smart digital solutions.

He said Iraq was moving toward becoming an active regional transit hub linking neighboring countries and supporting international supply chains with greater reliability and security.
