President Masoud Pezeshkian has appointed Abdolnasser Hemmati as governor of the Central Bank of Iran, replacing Mohammadreza Farzin.
Mehdi Tabatabaei, the deputy for communications and information at the presidential office, said on Monday that Pezeshkian had accepted Farzin’s resignation earlier in the day and named Hemmati as his successor.
Hemmati, 67, previously served as central bank governor from 2018 until May 2021 and later held the post of economy minister under the current administration. He was impeached by parliament in March this year.
An economist and veteran policymaker, Hemmati was also a reformist candidate in Iran’s 2021 presidential election.
Hemmati’s appointment is subject to approval by the cabinet following a proposal by the economy minister and will be formalized by a presidential decree. The process is expected to be finalized at a cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
