Strait of Hormuz developments reshape Persian Gulf trade

Recent upheavals and the spillover effects of the war in Iran have pushed the Persian Gulf into a new phase of geo-economic realignment, turning the Strait of Hormuz into a decisive factor for trade, energy and economic security, according to a senior Iranian business official.

“Today’s disruption is not a temporary glitch but a shift in the logic governing a vital global chokepoint,” Khorshid Gazderazi, head of the Iran-Qatar Joint Chamber of Commerce, wrote in a note. “Trade decisions are now tied to geopolitical risk, transport security, and hidden costs from uncertainty.”

Regional states have moved away from traditional patterns toward “strategic caution,” making decisions based on constant cost-risk calculations rather than fixed alliances, he added.

Against this backdrop, Iran-Qatar trade ties have entered a state of “operational suspension.” While business-to-business contacts remain, domestic production declines, disrupted communications infrastructure and logistical restrictions have hindered normal flows.

Direct shipments of Iranian goods are largely limited to Oman, with only occasional re-exports via Oman to destinations such as the UAE or Qatar, Gazderazi said.

The joint chamber said it continues to provide legal advice, operational follow-ups and liaison with port officials and relevant bodies in both countries to resolve outstanding commercial issues and pave the way for a gradual return to stable trade routes.
