Iraq’s Dhi Qar poised to become new market for Iranian goods

Iraq’s southern province of Dhi Qar is emerging as a promising new market for Iranian products, according to Mostafa Mousavi, head of the Khorramshahr Chamber of Commerce.

Iraq’s southern province of Dhi Qar is emerging as a promising new market for Iranian products, according to Mostafa Mousavi, head of the Khorramshahr Chamber of Commerce.

Mousavi said recent administrative changes in Baghdad have created new opportunities to strengthen economic ties between southern Iraqi provinces and Iran’s Khuzestan Province.

He noted that Dhi Qar’s growing consumer market, young workforce, and agricultural economy make it an attractive destination for Iranian companies.

The province is expected to see increasing demand for agricultural machinery, irrigation systems, livestock inputs, power generation projects, and technical and engineering services, creating opportunities for businesses from Khuzestan.

Customs data show that more than 221,000 tons of goods worth around $60 million were exported from Khuzestan to Iraq during the first month of the new Iranian calendar year (March 21 – April 20, 2026), highlighting Iraq’s importance as a key export market.

Mousavi also pointed to opportunities in health tourism and stressed the importance of upgrading infrastructure at the Shalamcheh border crossing to facilitate trade and strengthen economic links between Iran and southern Iraq.
