Iran and Turkey are expected to reopen their joint land border to travelers as of next week after a long interval, according to a senior transportation official.

The land border between Iran and Turkey was shut down to travelers from both countries since two years ago due to the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease.

Mohammad Javad Hedayati, director general of Transit and International Transportation Affairs Bureau of Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, said that the organization is scheduled to have a meeting with travel agencies next week to resume bus travels to Turkey.

He noted that it is necessary for the travelers to have a negative COVID-19 PCR test or a vaccination card.

Over 90 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered across Iran since the start of the vaccination campaign, the Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

More than 53.3 million people have received a first shot, 36.6 million have been fully vaccinated and 102,000 have been given a booster shot, pushing the national tally past the 90 million mark, according to the announcement.

Turkey was Iran’s biggest export destination in the sixth month of the current fiscal year (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) with 5.84 million tons worth $1.2 billion of shipment.
