Iran has reportedly stopped pumping gas to Turkey due to a maintenance project on the Iranian pipeline to Turkey.

The repairing and maintenance project on the pipeline which has begun on October 2 will continue for eight days to October 9, Iran’s official IRNA news agency said according to an announcement by Turkey’s Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS).

The announcement says that the temporary halt of pumping Iranian gas to Turkey will cause no difficulty for the country.

Turkey is reliant on gas imports from Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan for meeting its energy needs.

A hike in global prices and a highly weakened Turkish lira has majorly increased the price of energy carriers in Turkey.

The Iranian Presidential Office said in a report on July 19 that talks on a new Iran-Turkey gas supply deal had started based on agreements reached between Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a meeting held earlier in the day in Tehran.

“It was agreed in this regard that a renewal of the contract for exports of Iran’s gas to Turkey for 25 years and an increase in the amount of exports would be on the agenda of the two sides and negotiations (on the issue) started after that,” said the report.
