As the new coronavirus claims more lives in Iran, the country speeds up efforts to combat the highly-contagious disease.

Iran is one of the worst-hit nations in terms of fatalities. The figures presented by Iran’s health ministry showed the number of positive cases in the capital Tehran had exceeded that of Qom where the virus first broke out in the country.

Authorities say busy terminals in Tehran could be a breeding ground for the new coronavirus. Tehran's municipality has placed its focus on sanitization and disinfection in public spaces.

The health ministry has advised people to take every possible precautionary measure including practicing personal hygiene and avoiding unnecessary trips to minimize the risk of exposure and transmission.

COVID-19 first emerged in China in December last year. The highly transmissible virus targets the respiratory system and is now affecting some 60 countries.

Officials say, for now that no vaccine for the coronavirus is made, precaution is the only protection from the deadly virus.
