The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) announced on Saturday that as much as 876 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas had been consumed in the country within 24 hours.
The NIGC report said that some 71 percent of the total consumption were related to the household sector.
Iran relies on natural gas for a bulk of its electricity generation demand, according to figures provided by a senior energy expert who believes low-efficiency rates in Iranian power plants are causing a considerable amount of waste in the sector.
In November 2024, Hashem O’raei, a senior energy expert, said that the share of gas in power generation in Iran had increased from 35% in 1985 to 86% in 2022.
That comes as the global power plant demand for natural gas had risen from 14% to 23% over the same period, he stated.
Speaking during the 26th ministerial meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Tehran on December 8, 2024, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad projected that natural gas will account for 26% of the global energy basket by 2050.
