Following record cold in Iran, the government announced widespread shutdowns across the country to reduce gas consumption and subsequent supply cuts.

All the Iranian schools were shutdown with the government organizations being closed in capital Tehran on Saturday.

The shutdowns came after record gas consumption led to gas supply cuts in five cities in northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi.

The organizations opened a day later but they operated with one third of their staff keeping the temperature at minimum at work.

Although working in Tehran returned to normalcy on Monday and all the staff were called back to work, both the state and private sector offices were asked to save energy and keep the temperature between 18 and 21 degree Celsius. The schools are still shutdown all across the country and the students receive online education.

Iranian Minister of Petroleum appreciated the cooperation of people in energy savings on Monday noting that some 6 mcm/d of gas was saved in Tehran over the past few days.

He said that the ministry is carrying out overhauls and other measures in the gas production platforms to increase output.

Iran has registered an average temperature of -10 degree Celsius in 20 provinces in the past few days which has been a record low.

Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Company Majid Chegeni said that gas consumption in the commercial and household sectors reached 700 million cubic meters per day on Jan. 12.
