Iran says nothing will stop it from further developing ties with Turkey.
“Iran doesn’t see any obstacles or restrictions to expand relations, especially economic and commercial ones, with Turkey”, said Iran president's Chief of Staff, Mahmoud Vaezi in a meeting with Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday.
The Iranian official also stressed that the two neighbours should accelerate implementation of previous treaties and pave the way for more economic cooperation.
Iran and Turkey share a 560-km-long border. The two neighbours have recently turned into close regional allies and have been leading political efforts to bring the war in Syria to and end. The two also enjoy vast mutual trade and commerce relations worth 5 billion dollars and seek to increase the trade volume to up to 30 billion.
Erdogan also praised the bilateral relations with Iran and highlighted the “strategic importance” of more cooperation between the two countries.
Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, is expected to travel to Turkey soon to attend the fifth Turkish-Iranian High Level Cooperation Council (HLCC). The event, inaugurated in 2014, is set to be held in Turkey. However, no date has been set so far. The last meeting was held in Tehran in October 2017.
