Iran welcomes Japanese investment in Chabahar Port: Rouhani

The Iranian president has told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that Tehran wants Tokyo to invest in Chabahar Port that has been exempted from the US sanctions.

The Iranian president has told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that Tehran wants Tokyo to invest in Chabahar Port that has been exempted from the US sanctions.

Iran says it wolcomes the Japanese investment in its strategic Chabahar Port on the shores of the Sea of Oman.

“Iran welcomes the Japanese cooperation and investment in Chabahar as well as Makran regions and is ready to attract the Japanese investment,” said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tehran on Wednesday.

Rouhani added that Iran looks to strengthen political and economic relations with Japan, especially in energy relations.

According to Abe Spokesman Takeshi Osuga, during that meeting Rouhani had wished that Tokyo keep buying Iranian oil after the US sanctions waivers ended on 2 May.

Abe told Rouhani that his government has had serious negotiations with the US to obtain further waivers for Iran oil imports.

“I hope bilateral talks on Japanese investment in southern Iranian free zones, especially Chabahar, will bear fruit very soon,” Rouhani added.

One part of the the Iranian Chabahar region, that is, Shaheed Behesti Port, is being developed by India in a bid to send its cargoes to Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistán.

Tehran is asking other countries to keep investing in the Chabahar Port that has been exempted from the US sanctions.
