Iran private sector says it has all the capacity to fully enter the Iraqi reconstruction market as the neighbouring country eyes foreign investment to rebuild itself.

Iranian private entrepreneurs and businessmen, affiliated with Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, took part in a forum where the Iranian and Iraqi businessmen in construction and building discussed cooperation.

“If we are supposed to be successful in this road, the government needs to help the private sector. Iran has achieved good advances in maritime industries, road construction, technical and engineering services, electricity and other industries and through investment in Iraq, we can have very good influence on the reconstruction in Iraq,” said Iran Chamber of Commerce Vice President Mohammad Amirzadeh on Tuesday.

Iraqi government estimates say damages from the war are some 45 billion dollars and that Baghdad needs some 80 billion dollars to reconstruct the damaged infrastructure.

Iran eyes a lion’s share of the Iraqi reconstruction market.
