A senior UAE official is due to visit Tehran this week to discuss the inauguration of a corridor linking the UAE to Turkey via Iranian soil, according to the director of Transit and International Transportation Affairs Bureau of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization Javad Hedayati.
The visit to Iran by the UAE official is taking place following the de-escalation of tensions between Iran and the UAE on the one hand and between Turkey and the UAE on the other hand.
The UAE has been sending commodities to Turkey from Sharjah Port to Mersin Port via Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Suez Canal.
The marine transportation of commodities from the UAE to Turkey has become more expensive recently.
Also, it will take 20 days for the UAE to send its commodities to Turkey while an alternate route through Iran will take only 12 days.
It is said that Egypt is one of the main opponents to the launch of UAE-Iran-Turkey corridor as it will reduce the number of ships passing through the Suez Canal.
