EU oil imports from Iran are not significant but are indicative of the eagerness of the European refineries to receive Iranian oil and their ignorance of the US sanctions against Tehran.

Iran’s oil supplies to the EU can be seen at least as a sign of protest by the bloc members to the long years of US sanctions which have targeted different sections of the Iranian economy, including its oil industry which is one of the main sources of revenue of the country.

The Eurostat report said that three EU states – namely Romania, Poland and Bulgaria – were importing oil and oil products from Iran in 2022.

Romania was the newest EU state that receives oil supplies from Iran.

In 2022, Romania imported a total of 4,000 tons of Iranian oil and oil products, with Bulgaria and Poland receiving 168 and 13 tons of the products from Iran respectively.
