Iranian government has bought more than 5 million metric tons (mt) of wheat from domestic farmers in the first 100 days of national wheat purchase operation, according to the country’s ministry of agriculture (MAJ).

The ministry said it has bought a total of 5.015 million mt of the crop from some 309 farmers in a 100-day time span (March 21 – June 28).

The domestic purchase of wheat in the first 100 days of the Iranian calendar year is 1.107 million mt more than that of last year’s corresponding period, indicating a 28% year-on-year increase, the MAJ report said.

The report added that more than 67% of the farmers have been paid so far for the price of their products by the government.

Head of the country’s Plan and Budget Organization Davoud Manzoor said late May that the Iranian government expects it will buy as much as 8 million metric tons (mt) of wheat from domestic farmers in the current harvesting season ending late July.
