Iran has generated as much as 264 million kilowatts of renewable energy in the calendar month to late August, according to official data.

The figure is up 23% compared to that of last year’s same month, the Center for Monitoring Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Production affiliated to Iran’s Ministry of Energy said in a report on Sunday.

It added that the country’s renewable electricity generation hit 1280 million kilowatts since the beginning of the current calendar year on March 20.

Affected by climate change, Iran witnessed unprecedented heat this summer and the country seeks to diversify its sources of power generation.

The National Development Fund of Iran (NDF) signaled readiness last year to allocate $5 billion for construction of renewable power plants.
