Iran’s Ministry of Energy has announced plans to increase wind power generation capacity to 8,000 megawatts (MW) as part of a broader strategy to achieve 30,000 MW from renewable energy sources, including solar and wind.

With its unique geographical location, Iran is among the Middle East countries with the highest potential for wind energy development. Studies estimate the country’s wind energy potential at approximately 30,000 MW—equivalent to a significant portion of Iran’s total electricity production capacity.

Currently, Iran’s installed wind power capacity stands at about 300 MW, far below its potential.

“Climate change, largely driven by excessive fossil fuel consumption, is a pressing global crisis. Expanding solar and wind power plants can play a key role in mitigating this challenge,” said Abbas Aliabadi, Iran’s Energy Minister.

Iran’s focus on renewable energy is seen as a crucial step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diversifying its energy mix in the face of global environmental challenges.
