President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the ministers of agriculture and interior to begin an urgent overhaul and implementation of a nationwide crop pattern reform plan, aimed at addressing the country’s growing climate and water resource challenges.

Under the directive which was issued on Thursday, provincial governors across Iran have been instructed to prioritize the revised crop pattern scheme and coordinate its rollout through local working groups involving relevant government bodies.

The plan is designed to enhance food security, conserve natural resources, and improve water-use efficiency in the agricultural sector – all seen as key to the government’s broader strategy to mitigate climate-related risks and imbalances in production.

This reform is a strategic step by the administration to address threats posed by climate change, water scarcity, and market instability in agricultural supply chains.

The directive comes as Iran faces severe environmental stress, including declining groundwater levels, erratic weather patterns, and disruptions to agricultural output. The government says coordinated action across all provinces is essential to ensure long-term sustainability and national food resilience.
