The president of Iran Chamber of Commerce told France’s ambassador in Tehran that the two countries can expand cooperation in non-sanctioned sectors such as agriculture, water management and pharmaceuticals, despite political strains hampering broader ties.

Samad Hassanzadeh said in a meeting with French Ambassador Pierre Cochard that economic engagement could help “offset some of the existing limitations” in bilateral relations. He urged the French embassy to work with the chamber to reduce barriers affecting business travel and freight transport between Iran and Europe.

Hassanzadeh said long-standing Iranian traders face new hurdles in obtaining French visas, while Iranian truck drivers moving goods to European markets also encounter restrictions. He called for a review of these curbs, noting that bilateral trade stands at about $400 million – “a very small figure” given Iran’s capacity in petrochemicals, polymers and food industries.

Cochard said France does not seek to maintain sanctions, adding that EU and UN restrictions relate mainly to military and nuclear issues and are far narrower than US measures. He said sectors such as pharmaceuticals and agriculture are not covered by those sanctions, allowing room for cooperation.

The ambassador said France maintains an “open” visa policy for economic actors, aiming to facilitate their attendance at French trade fairs and meetings with French companies.
