Iran-Switzerland Joint Chamber of Commerce has launched a campaign in partnership with the UNICEF and Iran’s Interior Ministry to improve the nutrition of children under the age of five in the country’s disadvantaged areas.

According to an announcement by Iran-Switzerland Joint Chamber of Commerce, the campaign aims at helping vulnerable children who have been undernourished in 2020 as a result of the socio-economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Iran-Switzerland Joint Chamber of Commerce has called on its members and others to join the campaign, called ‘Stand with Us’, by proving funding and food packages.

Iran is the hardest-hit country by the pandemic in the Middle East with more than 375,000 infections nationwide. The death toll from the virus has surged to over 21,500, according to the country’s Health Ministry.

An additional 6.7 million children under the age of five could suffer from wasting and therefore become dangerously undernourished globally in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a recent report by the UNICEF said.

According to the report, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, 47 million children were already wasted in 2019.

Wasting is a life-threatening form of malnutrition, which makes children too thin and weak, and puts them at greater risk of dying, poor growth, development and learning.
