Japanese embassy in Tehran said on Sunday that Iran and Japan have signed an agreement on customs cooperation.

The Japanese embassy said in its official Twitter account that the agreement was signed in the Iranian capital earlier in the day between Japanese Ambassador to Tehran Ikawa Kazutoshi and Chairman of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) Mehdi Mirashrafi.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of a visit to Tehran by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

The document aims to provide administrative support for customs cooperation between the two countries, the embassy said.

During his stay in Tehran, the Japanese foreign minister has so far met with President Ebrahim Raeisi, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani.

Speaking in a meeting on Sunday with the visiting Japanese foreign minister, President Raeisi emphasized the need for freeing Iran's financial resources in Japan.

Raeisi noted that any delay in the release of Iranian frozen assets in the Japanese banks is not justifiable.

In reaction to the Japanese foreign minister’s remarks on the need and importance of implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as an international agreement, President Raeisi said that it was the US that withdrew from the deal and re-imposed new sanctions against Tehran.
