Iran-Armenia border crossing reopens after short closure

The gateway between Iran and Armenia, that was closed a day earlier, has reopened, according to Ruhollah Latifi, the spokesman of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).  

Latifi said that news coming from the border and comments by drivers crossing the border suggest that the gateway has reopened and the trucks and buses on both sides have been allowed to cross the border.  

The border crossing was closed on Friday by Azerbaijani forces.

Negotiations between Baku and Yerevan was due to be held later on Friday and the reopening of the gateway may have followed the talks.

Iran-Armenia border is an important border for Iran to access the markets of the Eurasian region.

Iran has exported some $258 million worth of commodities to EAEU member countries over the first quarter of the fiscal year (March 21-June22), importing some $347 million worth of commodities from the bloc.

Russia has the biggest share of imports from Iran among the EAEU member countries, importing some $135 million worth of commodities from Iran during the three-month period, followed by Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Belarus with 60, 38, 18, and 5 million dollars worth of imports from Iran respectively.

Fruits worth of 95 million dollars have the biggest share of Iran's export to Russia and other Eurasian countries.

Iran imported fats, grains, wood, vegetable and chemical products from the region.

IRICA figures showed that trade with EAEU had accounted for 4.6% of Iran’s total trade in the year to late March.
