Road transit of commodities via Iranian soil in the first three quarters of the fiscal year (March 21- Dec 21) has increased 116% compared to figures from the corresponding period of the preceding year, according to a senior transportation official.

Mohammad Javad Hedayati, director general of Transit and International Transportation Affairs Bureau of Iran's Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, said on Sunday that some 6.7 million tons of commodities were transited via Iranian soil during the period under review.

He said the figure posted a 111% increase in terms of weight and 116% growth in terms of the number of lorries when compared to figures from the corresponding nine-month period of the preceding year.

The official noted that the figure also registered a 28% and a 34% increase in terms of weight and the number of lorries in comparison to figures from the same period of two years ago before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Iranian government is gradually easing curbs caused by the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease as both the number of cases and the deaths are falling.

The COVID-19 death toll in Iran fell to 18 on Saturday (January 15), a record low in 628 days.

A total of 53,064,275 Iranian people have become fully vaccinated against the pandemic so far receiving the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a daily update by the Ministry of Health.

Moreover, 12,205,821 people have also received the third shot as the booster jab.
