The volume of annual trade between Iran and the United States stood at $40.6 million in 2021, according to latest data released by the US Census Bureau.

The figure almost remained unchanged compared to 2020 figures which put annual trade between the two countries at $40.2 million.

Iran’s imports from the United States over the one year period accounted for $39.4 million of the sum which shows nearly 8.5% growth compared to figures from the preceding year ($36.3 million).

However, the share of Iran’s exports to the US was as little as $1.2 million posting a 225% decline compared to $3.9 million of 2020.

According to Ahmadreza Farshchian, a member of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Iran’s exports to the US are limited to those shipped by passengers with Iranian supermarkets in the US as their destination.

"American businessmen and companies have not bought Iranian goods for years and there is no import from Iran. American companies are reluctant to do business with Iran in fear of the consequences of violating Washington’s sanctions,” he added.

According to Hassan Shokouhi, the head of Irans's Food Supplements Importers Union, American medicines find their way to the Iranian market in return via third-party countries, mainly the UAE.
