Iran’s largest carmaker the IKCO has unveiled a first fully home-made crossover amid plans to comply with government directives to diversify its models and improve the quality of its products.

Major Iranian carmaker Iran Khodro Company (IKCO) unveils the country’s first home-grown crossover in a ceremony in Tehran on June 26, 2022.

Iran’s largest carmaker the IKCO has unveiled a first fully home-made crossover amid plans to comply with government directives to diversify its models and improve the quality of its products.

The Iran Khodro Company’s Rira model was unveiled on Sunday in ceremony attended by Iran’s minister of industries Reza Fatemi Amin in IKCO’s headquarters in the west of the Iranian capital Tehran.

A report by the official IRNA news agency said Rira will be equipped with a 1.7 liter 16-valve turbocharged engine.

Rira means rain in Mazani dialect, which is spoken in northern Iran. The IKCO plans to produce the car in its plant in Babol, a city located in the same region.

IKCO’s head of development and manufacturing Kianoush Pourmojib said the company will start mass production of Rira before September 2023.

Pourmojib said the model will be one of the safest and strongest cars produced by the IKCO with a powerful body.

Industries minister Fatmei Amin said the government will provide support to the IKCO in the Rira project which he described as a national crossover car.

He said the car is expected to start its road tests in September this year.

The unveiling comes months after Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi ordered domestic car manufacturers to speed up plans for reform in their production and sales systems.

The orders stipulated that the IKCO and Iran’s second largest carmaker Saipa should discontinue some of their old models and introduce new products to respond to the demand for high-quality and modern cars in Iran’s domestic market.
