Iran is currently exporting between 1500 and 1600 megawatts/day of electricity to foreign countries, according to Arash Kordi, the managing director of Iran Power Generation Transmission and Distribution Company (TAVANIR).

“Afghanistan and Turkmenistan are the countries which receive electricity from Iran,” Kordi was quoted as saying by IRNA official news agency.

He said that electricity exports take place when domestic needs are met and consumption is not high.

When domestic needs are high, Iran exports electricity at the least of its international liabilities, the official said.

He noted that Iran also imports nearly 500 megawatts/day of electricity at peak times from Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
