Governor of Qatar Central Bank Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud Al-Thani has voiced his country’s adherence to banking commitments to Iran.
The official made the remarks in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart on Saturday.
The chief bankers of Iran and Qatar met in Morocco on the sidelines of the 2023 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF.
Rejecting the recent rumors about Qatar blocking Iran’s access to its funds recently unfrozen and transferred to Qatari banks, the governor of Qatar Central Bank said that such reports are more like a joke and a media game.
He said that Qatar upholds all its banking commitments to Iran and sees no obstacle to expansion of banking relations with the country.
Washington Post reported on Thursday that US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo had told House Democrats that American officials and the Qatari government had agreed to stop Iran from accessing a $6 billion account in the wake of a surprise attack by the Palestinian Hamas resistance group against Israel.
Adeyemo’s remarks were cited by two people who were speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Iran had immediately rejected the claims.
