Iran has plans to increase its auto output to 1.7 million in the current calendar year to March 2025, according to an official familiar with the matter.
Ahmad Aghaei, the caretaker of the transportation department of Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade, told ISNA news agency on Monday that this would be a “meaningful and significant” 28-percent rise over last year’s production of 1.340 million vehicles.
The official noted that the re-imposition of US sanctions on Iran in 2018 slashed Iranian auto output to below 1 million for four years.
After the late President Ebrahim Raisi assumed power in 2021, Iran’s auto industry began recovering from the pressure of sanctions so that the country’s auto output surged 1.2 million a year later.
