Iran has registered new highs in gasoline and gasoil consumption as inter-city trips have increased since the beginning of the last month of summer vacations on August 22.
Keramat Veis-Karami, the head of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC), said that the country’s gasoline consumption reached an average 132 million liters per day during the mentioned period, an increase of 8% against last year’s corresponding period when the figure stood at 122 million liters a day.
He attributed the rise in fuel consumption on the increasing number of vehicles in the country, rising summer vacation trips, using air conditioners by cars in warm weather, and worn-out vehicles.
The official said that since the beginning of the current Iranian year on March 20, Iran has consumed an average daily 123 million liters of gasoline, marking a 7% year-on-year increase.
Persian Gulf Star refinery in southern Iran is responsible for 40% of the country’s gasoline needs.
To address the surge in domestic demand, the Iranian government have at times halted the exports of fuels and even occasionally resumes fuel imports.
