Mohammad Hadi Sobhanian, Deputy Minister of Economy and the head of Iran’s National Tax Administration (INTA) has said that tax revenues are now covering 73% of the country’s public costs.

Speaking at a conference in Tehran on Saturday, Sobhanian said that tax revenues used to account for 40% of Iran’s public costs three years ago, reflecting a 57% in tax receipts in a short period of time.

Economy Minister Abdolnasser Hemmati also addressed the conference, stressing that the country’s tax and subsidy systems have to be interconnected so that families receiving cash subsidies will be exempt from paying taxes.

Hit by sanctions which have targeted oil industry, a main source of Iran’s revenue, the country is counting on tax revenues to cut reliance on oil sales.
