Iran’s state-run shipping company, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), has risen three places to rank as the world’s 16th largest container carrier, according to industry tracker Alphaliner.
The gain, achieved within months, reflects increased TEU capacity, fleet optimization, and the expansion of logistics corridors, notably via Chabahar port. IRISL said domestic ship repair and modernization programs have bolstered efficiency despite international sanctions. The carrier could break into the top 15 if current growth continues.
IRISL, founded in 1967, is Iran’s largest maritime transport company and a key player in the country’s foreign trade despite decades of sanctions that have limited access to global ports and financing.
