Trade between Iran and Brazil remained largely unchanged in the first five months of the current fiscal year (started March 21, 2025) compared with the same period last year, the chairman of the Iran-Brazil Joint Chamber of Commerce says.

In an exclusive interview with Iran Chamber of Commerce newsroom, Fakhreddin Amerian said Iranian exporters are unable to ship goods directly to Brazil because of sanctions on Iran’s shipping sector, forcing them to route exports through third countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Turkey.

“As a result, it is difficult to provide precise trade statistics between the two countries,” he said, noting that most exports are carried out through “cross-stuffing” arrangements in intermediary ports.

Amerian said US tariffs on Brazilian goods could create opportunities for Iranian exporters as US President Donald Trump have imposed duties of 50% on some Brazilian products which he said could redirect trade flows.

“Brazil has not yet imposed reciprocal tariffs on US products, but it is likely to do so,” he said. “That would also create opportunities for our exporters, particularly in supplying petrochemical feedstock, where Iran already has a strong market in Brazil.”

He said Iranian exporters expect to expand shipments to Brazil in the second half of the year.
