Iraq welcomes Iranian private sector investment in the country’s industry and infrastructure, prime minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said on Monday.

“The situation is ripe for the presence of Iranian private sector in Iraq. We welcome Iranian investors in various projects in our country,” Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abduld Mahdi told Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during a meeting on Monday.

“Iraq and Iran have always had common interests and today we are feeling that our bilateral relations are expanding and being strengthened,” he added.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is on a three-day state visit to Iraq to deepen business and political ties with the western neighbour.

Al Mahdi stressed that Baghdad is “keen” on expanding, deepening and strengthening ties with Tehran.

Rouhani, for his part, also hailed “historical relations” between the two countries, noting that further banking ties and using national currencies will further expand mutual economic relations.
