China seeks stronger trade ties with Iran: Ambassador

Chinese Ambassador to Iran Cong Peiwu reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening trade relations with Iran across all sectors, during a meeting on Monday with Mohammad-Ali Dehghan Dehnavi, head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO).

Ambassador Cong emphasized the importance of enhancing trade cooperation between the two nations, highlighting China’s interest in expanding economic exchanges in various fields.

Dehghan Dehnavi echoed the ambassador’s sentiments, stating that trade relations between Iran and China are at an all-time high.

He noted that the TPO is eager to foster further constructive ties and that Iran’s recent membership in multilateral agreements, including BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, will bolster trade collaboration.

Dehghan Dehnavi also pointed to international exhibitions, technology transfer, and advancements in the industrial and mining sectors as crucial avenues for deepening bilateral cooperation.

In a previous meeting with President of Iran Chamber of Commerce Samad Hassanzadeh, Ambassador Cong had voiced his country’s readiness to engage in Iran’s mining projects, especially in its copper mines, adding that the embassy is working in close connection with Iran-China Joint Chamber of Commerce.

According to a report by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), China has remained Iran’s top export destination during the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20 - September 21), importing $7.2 billion in goods. The country was followed by Iraq with $5.2 billion, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with $3.4 billion.

On the import front, the UAE was the largest source of goods for Iran, with $10 billion in imports, followed by China with $8.5 billion, Turkey with $5.1 billion.

In terms of overall trade partnerships, China led with $15.7 billion in bilateral trade, followed by the UAE at $13.4 billion, and Turkey with $7.5 billion, making them Iran’s top three trading partners.
